Hampi: The UNESCO World Heritage Ruins of the Mighty Vijayanagara Empire

Hampi is a mesmerizing UNESCO World Heritage Site in Karnataka, home to the magnificent ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of medieval India’s greatest kingdoms. Situated along the banks of the Tungabhadra River, this historic destination features over 1,600 surviving structures, including temples, palaces, forts, and ancient marketplaces spread across a dramatic landscape of granite boulders and rocky hills.

Once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi is renowned for the Group of Monuments at Hampi, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Dating primarily from the 14th to 16th centuries, these well-preserved monuments showcase the architectural brilliance, cultural heritage, and grandeur of a bygone era, making Hampi one of India’s most remarkable historical and archaeological destinations.
