Ratnagiri, situated on Maharashtra’s Konkan coast, is where the Arabian Sea crashes against historic forts, Alphonso mango groves sway in salty breezes, and colonial palaces whisper tales of exiled kings. Far from Mumbai’s frenzy, this seaside town blends Maratha might, golden sands, and seafood feasts into a laid-back escape for Indian travellers craving sun, surf, and stories. From the imposing Ratna Durga to the serene Bhatye Beach, Ratnagiri feels like a secret handshake between history and horizon.
How to Reach Ratnagiri
Ratnagiri’s gateways are commuter-friendly. The roads are well connected and the journey is worth the reward.
By Air: Closest airport is Ratnagiri Domestic Airport (20 kms north), with flights from Mumbai (45 mins). Kolhapur (150 kms) or Goa (200 kms) work too. Taxis zip you to town in 30-45 mins.
By Rail: Ratnagiri Railway Station is central, on the Konkan Railway; trains like Konkan Kanya from Mumbai (5-6 hours) or Tutari Express from Pune (6 hours) drop you amid beaches.
By Road: Distance from Mumbai is 340 kms (7-8 hours journey via NH66), while from Pune it is 200 kms (5 hours journey). MSRTC buses and private AC Volvos run frequently on this route, however, a self-drive car for coastal pitstops at Roha or Chiplun would be a great option.
Best Time to Visit Ratnagiri
October to March is the golden period to visit Ratnagiri with pleasant temperatures (25-30°C) during the day and low humidity. It is the perfect time to explore beaches and forts. Mango season (April-June) adds sweetness, but summers are scorching. Monsoons (June-Sept) bring dramatic waves but slippery trails, which can restrict outdoor activities.

Packing, Food, and Getting Around
Pack beach-ready: swimsuits, rash guards, flip-flops, quick-dry clothes, hat, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent. Light woollens for evenings, raincoat for monsoons, binoculars for forts/birds, and last but not the least reusable bottles.
Eat like locals: Konkani seafood is an absolute delight; sol kadhi (kokum drink), bombil fry (bombay duck), prawn koliwada, Alphonso aamras. Try fish thali at beach shacks, vada pav or misal pav in markets, ukdiche modak at temples. For your sweet tooth, Mango ice cream or puran poli will be the best options.
Auto rickshaws are your best options to get around (₹20-50 short hops), followed by shared rickshaws, or app cabs. You can rent bikes/scooters (₹300/day) for beaches or take taxis for forts (₹1500 full-day approx). ST buses link Ganpatipule (25 km south) or you can also take ferries which are rare but scenic. To Summarise
Ratnagiri isn’t like a party in Goa, it’s like a relaxing and soulful sigh of the Konkan. It is like Thiba Palace’s exile echoes meet the waves at Bhatye, Ratna Durga guards, and mango heartlands. Come for forts and fish, stay for sunrises that taste like fresh tapas (mango shakes) everywhere.
