Ganga Expressway Milestone: 594-KM Mega Project Set for Grand Inauguration in January 2026

The landscape of Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure is about to witness a historic transformation. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has confirmed that the much-anticipated Ganga Expressway, connecting Meerut to Prayagraj, is entering its final operational phase. According to the latest progress report uploaded on December 15, 2025, the project is on track for a high-profile inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the second week of January 2026.

The mid-December status report from UPEIDA highlights a significant engineering feat. Construction crews have successfully completed all 1,498 pillar structures (bridges, flyovers, and underpasses) across the 594-kilometer stretch. This 100% completion of the structural backbone ensures that there are no remaining bottlenecks for the high-speed corridor.

Furthermore, the report indicates that the main carriageways are now 99% complete. Contractors are currently finishing the final layers of bituminous work, installing safety railings, and painting road markings. The speed of execution has allowed the authority to meet the aggressive year-end targets set by the state government to ensure the expressway is ready before the peak of the winter season.

With the civil work nearly finished, the project is moving into the testing phase. UPEIDA officials have scheduled the comprehensive trial run for the first week of January 2026. During this week, technical teams will test the asphalt quality, structural integrity of the bridges, and the functionality of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS).

Following a successful trial, the state government plans to host the inauguration ceremony around January 15, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to dedicate the expressway to the nation, though the exact date remains subject to his final schedule. The timing is strategically significant, as it provides a massive boost to regional connectivity just as the state gears up for major cultural and economic events.

The Ganga Expressway is not just a road; it is a vital economic artery for Uttar Pradesh. Once operational, the expressway will slash travel time between Meerut in Western UP and Prayagraj in Eastern UP from the current 12-13 hours to a mere 6-7 hours.

By bypassing congested city centers and providing a seamless, access-controlled route, the expressway will offer a maximum speed limit of 120 km/hr. This will significantly reduce logistics costs for farmers and industries, particularly for those moving perishable goods between the two ends of the state.

The project includes several world-class features that set it apart:

  • Emergency Airstrip: A 3.5-km long airstrip in Shahjahanpur is already complete, designed to facilitate emergency landings and take-offs for Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets.
  • Expanding Capacity: While the expressway is launching as a 6-lane corridor, the structures are built to accommodate an expansion to 8 lanes in the future to meet rising traffic demands.
  • Industrial Corridors: The state has identified land along the expressway to develop industrial clusters, which are expected to generate thousands of local jobs.
  • Connectivity: The route passes through 12 key districts, including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, and Pratapgarh.

The Ganga Expressway represents a total investment of approximately ₹36,230 crore. By connecting the industrial hubs of the West with the spiritual and educational centers of the East, the project fulfills a long-standing demand for a “spine” that integrates the state’s diverse regions.

Local residents and businesses in the 519 villages along the route are already anticipating a surge in real estate value and commercial opportunities. As the final touch-ups continue through the end of December, all eyes remain on the second week of January for the official flag-off of India’s second-longest expressway.
